Daily Life in the Pet Shop Ch. 178
"You guys came downstairs—who's still up there? All mysterious, not even letting me in," Fang Yue walked up quickly when she saw them coming down.
"Ning Feng and Pei Haoyan. Probably trying to pair up Pei Datou and Naiba," Fang Yi said casually. "If you're free now, take them to the backyard for a stroll. I've gotta go prep some stuff." He didn't wait for her reply and just plopped Duoduo right into her arms before glancing back at the lounge door. He could've sworn he just heard the tragic howling of Pei Datou from inside.
In the kitchen, Fang Yi had just finished sorting through a batch of supplies when he suddenly heard barking. Naima came bounding in, and behind him was Naiba—looking like a total wreck. Her fur was a mess, her face full of grievance, trailing behind Naima like she'd just been utterly traumatized. Whether their little matchmaking attempt succeeded was still a mystery.
"Woof woof woof!" Naima barked at Fang Yi, clearly feeling bad for Naiba.
"Alright, alright. I'll keep an eye on her and won't let his dad take her away," Fang Yi said as he ruffled Naiba's head. After a quick once-over, he guessed Ning Feng and the others hadn't pulled it off.
"I'm exhausted. I knew Naiba would run back here," Ning Feng panted as he appeared at the doorway. When Naiba heard his voice, she whimpered softly and tried to hide behind Naima again.
"Too much trouble. I'm not doing this kind of thing ever again. Pei Datou's just not that lucky," Pei Haoyan added with a shake of his head.
"Where's Datou?" Fang Yi asked, noticing both guys were here, but the third party was missing.
"He's probably traumatized," Pei Haoyan sighed. "He's been sulking in the room ever since, won't even look at me. You'd better send Naima over to comfort him. Can't let him stew like this—it's not healthy." He was seriously starting to regret forcing the issue earlier. If Pei Datou couldn't... well, get it up anymore, it'd 100% be his fault.
"Naima, go check on Pei Datou, see what's up," Fang Yi said. Considering Naiba was already the bigger one and still got roughed up this badly, Pei Datou probably got it even worse—he definitely needed some comforting right now.
Naima let out a soft howl and trotted off. Naiba just stood there, dazed, watching him leave. Naiba let out a couple of pitiful little whimpers, then shuffled over and curled up by Fang Yi's leg, wrapping both front paws around it like a clingy toddler who didn't want to be left behind.
"You guys must've really gone hard on Naiba to scare her like this. She's never been this clingy with me before," Fang Yi said. He had never seen Naiba looking so drained.
"We... we didn't go that hard on it," Ning Feng coughed a couple of times and said. Then he gently called out to Naiba a few times, but Naiba just whined and ignored him.
"Yeah, right. Sounds like you did. You two are totally unreliable. If they're not into it, then just drop it—forcing them isn't okay." Fang Yi clearly disapproved as he talked to Ning Feng. If something like that left psychological trauma, it'd be a big problem—he didn't exactly have a pet therapist on standby.
Since Fang Yi usually helped Naima avoid Naiba and always tried to separate the two, Naiba only tolerated him out of respect for Naima. If it had been just the two of them alone, she definitely wouldn't have stayed this close to him. But now, Naiba was lying pathetically at his feet, paws hugging his leg like she had been completely traumatized, and Fang Yi couldn't help but feel a little heartbroken.
"Ugh! I'm done, I'm done. I'm giving up on the idea of baby Naibas forever. Come here, Naiba." Ning Feng had raised Naiba from when she was little, and even he had never seen her like this before. Not even when Naima rejected it back in the day did she get this down. They'd clearly gone way too far this time.
Naiba turned to glance at Ning Feng, looking super skeptical, then buried her head behind Fang Yi's leg, dodging him completely.
"Hah!" Ning Feng let out a long sigh and turned to Pei Haoyan. "We're not doing this again. Guess it's just not meant to be."
"My Pei Datou probably hates me too. His face is all messed up," Pei Haoyan said with a helpless expression.
Just as Pei Haoyan finished speaking, Naima came over with Pei Datou trailing behind him. Pei Datou was dragging his feet, totally out of it, looking exactly like Naima did after brushing his teeth—d**d inside.
"Woof woof woof woof!" As soon as Naiba saw Pei Datou, she flipped over and jumped up, barking furiously at him. It was the first time Fang Yi had ever heard Naiba bark that aggressively.
Pei Datou gave a half-hearted reply, totally drained, and stuck close behind Naima, ignoring Pei Haoyan completely.
"There, there, stop barking. I'll make you something yummy later. Naima, come over and comfort Naiba a bit," Fang Yi soothed Naiba. Then he glanced over at Pei Datou and realized he looked even worse than Naiba. He'd clearly been through it—his face had a huge cut on it.
"Pei Datou's hurt. Why didn't you guys take him over to get the wound cleaned up?" Fang Yi walked over and checked on Pei Datou. The cut was still bleeding, and Naima was gently licking it every now and then.
"He wouldn't let anyone touch him. Crawled under the couch and wouldn't come out," Pei Haoyan said, looking just as guilty. When he saw how big the cut was, he felt awful too. He walked over, trying to comfort Pei Datou, but Pei Datou quickly dodged away and ran to Fang Yi.
"You guys are seriously too much," Fang Yi said as he turned and looked at the two of them. "Do either of you know how to cut vegetables?"
"I do," Pei Haoyan raised his hand.
"Wash your hands and slice up the beef over there. Ning Feng, go chop the carrots. I'm gonna take Pei Datou up front and clean his wound." Fang Yi took off his apron and handed it to Pei Haoyan without waiting for a response, then grabbed Pei Datou and left.
Naiba glanced at Fang Yi, then at Ning Feng, and quietly followed Fang Yi out.
Fang Yi took Pei Datou to the front and got his wound properly cleaned up. Naima stood quietly beside Naiba, softly comforting her when he saw how out of it she looked. He even helped smooth out her messy fur with his tongue. When Fang Yi turned back to check on them, he could've sworn Naiba was smiling. But when he looked closer, Naiba still had the same utterly heartbroken expression on her face.
After tending to Pei Datou's wound, Fang Yi pulled him over to Naiba and tried to talk them both into calming down. He even asked Naima to help smooth things over. Finally, the tension between the two dogs started to ease up. Naiba stopped barking at Pei Datou, though they still kept their distance from each other.
