Daily Life in the Pet Shop Ch. 207
"If I'd known your family was that powerful, I'd rather Naima never ran into Pei Datou and Pei Daniu." Even though Pei Haoyan explained everything, Fang Yue still wasn't happy. She shook her head and left, turning to message Ning Feng to ask what they should do next—and to rant a bit about how over-the-top Pei Haoyan's family was. People like that, their shop really couldn't afford to get involved with.
"I know about the Pei family. You guys should try not to piss them off," Ning Feng replied quickly.
"I didn't need you to tell me that. With a family this insane, how could we even afford to offend them?" Fang Yue typed back with a snarky tone, tapping away at the keyboard fast.
Even though Fang Xu was making good money running a game company and Fang Yi wasn't short on cash either, Fang Yue had always seen herself as a broke girl. She just couldn't wrap her head around how the Pei family operated. Doing background checks before making friends? The world's full of sketchy people—must be exhausting for them to live like that. Wouldn't it be easier to just stay home every day?
"Xiao Yue, don't be mad," Pei Haoyan carefully stepped up to her, trying to make peace. "It's not like we do this with everyone we meet. It's just because my sister and I both really like this place and want to be friends with you guys. That's the only reason my family checked you out."
"I want to be alone for a bit, okay?" Fang Yue didn't even look at Pei Haoyan. She actually wanted to bite back with something like, Wow, thanks for thinking we're worth your time, but then she thought about what Ning Feng had said. In the end, she just backed down. That's just how reality worked.
"I'll... I'll go sit over there for a while," Pei Haoyan mumbled. It was pretty obvious Fang Yue was pissed. But he also knew his side was in the wrong. He had no idea how to cheer someone up, so all he could do was hang around awkwardly.
When Fang Yi got back, he saw Pei Haoyan sitting on the couch looking totally defeated. As soon as he saw Fang Yi, he jumped up and tried to smile, sounding a bit too eager.
"What do you want?" Fang Yi thought Pei Haoyan's attitude was kinda weird.
"Nothing! Did you have dinner yet? I'll treat you. My cousin owns a hotel and their lobster rice is seriously amazing. Let's go eat!" Pei Haoyan said, super enthusiastically.
"I already had lunch. You're here to pick up Pei Datou and Pei Daniu, right?" The moment they saw Pei Haoyan walk in, both Pei Datou and Pei Daniu jumped straight onto him.
"No, I just came to check in on you. Got anything going on lately? If you're having a hard time with something, talk to me—maybe I can help you out." Pei Haoyan let out a couple awkward chuckles after he said that. Hanging around here was honestly exhausting. After a few more words with Fang Yi, he got up and left.
"What's up with him?" Fang Yi turned to ask Fang Yue. He couldn't shake the feeling that Pei Haoyan was trying way too hard to get on his good side.
"He's totally trying to suck up to you. You really couldn't tell?" Fang Yue said, clearly annoyed.
"Did he do something to upset you? Is that why he's trying to get on my good side now?" Fang Yi finally got it after seeing Fang Yue's reaction. Pei Haoyan must've messed up somehow, and now he was hoping Fang Yi would help smooth things over.
"How could someone like him possibly upset me? He's a pampered young master from a powerful family. If he stomped his foot, the whole country would probably feel it. He's got a million rich and influential cousins. Why would he even bother with a nobody like me?" Fang Yue's voice dripped with sarcasm. Even Fang Yi couldn't bear to hear more—clearly, Pei Haoyan had really pissed her off.
"What the hell did he even do? If he comes back tomorrow, I'll teach him a lesson." It was rare for Fang Yue to get this mad, and Fang Yi couldn't figure out what someone like Pei Haoyan could've done to push her that far. The guy usually seemed pretty well-behaved.
"It's nothing major. He just—well, he decided he liked us, thought we were worth being friends with, but didn't trust us. So he had someone dig into our family history, our background, everything. Wouldn't be surprised if they even looked into Naima's past." Fang Yue didn't even wait for Fang Yi to reply—she shoved past him and walked off. No matter how she looked at it, the whole thing felt like a slap in the face.
"Alright, don't be mad anymore." Fang Yi was stunned for a second after hearing what she said, but quickly caught on. He followed her into the backyard to try and calm her down. "Look at it from another angle—since they already checked us out, maybe they'll feel more secure giving us money. Who knows, maybe they'll even toss in a few more million."
"We have money. We don't need theirs," Fang Yue snapped, clearly still fuming.
"Yeah, but what good does it do to get mad now that it's already done? It's not worth making yourself sick over those people. I'll help you out and give that Pei Haoyan guy a piece of my mind. Seriously, if he was gonna do a background check, he could've just kept it to himself. Why tell you and piss you off even more?"
Actually, back when they first met Pei Sisi's brothers, Du Qianze had already warned Fang Yi that the Pei family probably had a serious background. He said even though her brothers had high status, they probably weren't even the top of the food chain in their clan. Du Qianze had even heard of the Pei family being one of those "old money" families, and told Fang Yi to be extra careful around them. He also mentioned they might be the type to investigate people in secret. Turned out he was d**d-on.
"Brother, Hua Ziyi's out of prison." It was only after hearing Fang Yi's words that Fang Yue remembered what Pei Haoyan had told her. She'd been so mad, she completely forgot something that important.
"He's out? Already? That was fast." It hadn't even been that long.
"No idea how. But if the Pei family heard it, it's probably true. Are you gonna make a move?" Compared to Hua Ziyi, the Pei family's little background check felt like nothing.
"Yeah, let's handle it in the next few days. I'll bring Zhou Chongwen over, then talk to Pei Haoyan. Since they're so into investigating people, let's have them do a proper job of it." Fang Yi figured this would at least give Pei Haoyan a way to make up for what happened. He had already suspected that the Pei family might be investigating him, so it didn't really piss him off. Honestly, if he'd grown up in that kind of environment, he'd probably have done the same before getting close to someone.
