It grabbed his paper arm and rip!—tore it clean off.

The Buddha stuffed the paper limb into its mouth and started chewing.

Shen Huo would've been fine if he hadn't looked back. But now that he did, he almost dropped dead from shock.

'It eats people?!'

His feet kicked into overdrive like he had fire wheels strapped to them as he sprinted for dear life.

A sudden whirlwind blew through—hidden within it were razor-sharp blades. One of them sliced open Shen Huo's stomach, and his spiritual energy spilled out in waves.

He couldn't keep running forever.

Shen Huo stopped and chanted a spell under his breath.

Rain poured down from the sky, instantly dousing the raging flames. The firestorm vanished, and the evil Buddha froze where it stood.

Shen Huo finally let out a breath of relief.

Just as Shen Huo let his guard down, that evil Buddha started moving again, a sinister smile spreading across its face.

"Shen Huo, look out!"

A flash of red—Yang Yiyi threw herself in front of him.

Pshhk!

The evil Buddha's hand punched a gaping hole straight through Yang Yiyi's body.

Her face, already pale, turned almost ghost-white.

"Sister Yiyi!"

Shen Huo quickly formed a seal and froze the evil Buddha in place, then rushed to catch her.

"Sister, are you okay?"

Yang Yiyi shook her head. "I'm a vengeful ghost. As long as my resentment remains, I can't die."

Shen Huo let out a breath of relief. But just then, the frozen evil Buddha twitched again.

He gently set Yang Yiyi down in a safe spot, bit his fingertip, and traced a spell in the air using the incantation Yin Jiuxuan had taught him. Then he hurled the talisman at the evil Buddha!

The spell burst with howling wind, slicing the evil Buddha's body into pieces and scattering them across the ground.

Shen Huo staggered back a few steps, breathing hard.

His spiritual energy was almost completely drained—his paper body could barely hold together.

He ran back to Yang Yiyi to check on her wounds.

Even though she said she was fine, he could see it clearly—her injury wouldn't heal. The resentment in her body wasn't enough to fight off whatever that thing had done to her.

"What was that thing? Why could it hurt you?"

Yang Yiyi let Shen Huo help her up. "That thing... it might be related to the evil god of Ghost City. But the statue also carries a trace of Buddhist energy. That's probably why my wounds won't heal for now."

"Buddhist energy? That thing? A Buddha?"

Yang Yiyi wasn't totally sure, but when it struck her, she had definitely sensed some kind of Buddhist aura. That part, she was certain of.

As they spoke, the shattered pieces of the evil Buddha started pulling themselves back together.

"Shen Huo, quit thinking. Run!"

Shen Huo grabbed Yang Yiyi and helped her toward the other end of the red thread.

Just as the evil Buddha was about to catch up, Yang Yiyi turned into a strip of red silk and wrapped around the statue, binding it tightly in place.

The red silk began to burn full of holes.

Gritting her teeth through the pain, Yang Yiyi shouted, "Go!"

"No! I'm not leaving you behind!"

Shen Huo bit his finger again. Yin Jiuxuan's warning echoed in his mind:

"The first summoning spell calls on gods using your own blood and karma. But it's dangerous—I advise you not to use it now."

"Huh? Why not?" Back then, Shen Huo had been confused. If it was stronger, why not use it instead of that complicated second method?

"Because you've just started out. Your body can't handle that kind of divine summoning. Best case, internal damage. Worst case... you die."

But Yang Yiyi's life was on the line.

If he was really a man, then he wasn't going to hide behind a woman!

"Let not blood be the offering—spirits of Poria, hear my call. Judges of the Lunar Courts, summon the gods of the shadowed earth... I call upon the Northern Lord of Fengdu—appear!"

Pshhk! Blood surged up Shen Huo's throat and spilled from his mouth.

Back in the rental apartment, the Underworld Lord watching over Shen Huo's body was flipping through a book when he sensed something. Looking down and seeing blood drip from the corner of Shen Huo's mouth, he shut the book with a snap.

"So reckless with his body."

Just as the words left his mouth, the man who had been reading on the sofa vanished, leaving behind only an open stack of books.

On the other side, the tattooed man let out a scornful laugh.

"Pfft, what an idiot. As if the Lord of the Northern Yin would bother with matters of the living world—wait, what the hell is that?!"

From the evil Buddha's perspective, behind the tiny paper figure, a shadowy divine form emerged—a True Lord's manifestation, impossible to look at directly, radiating overwhelming pressure.

The divine figure merely lifted a hand.

The evil Buddha didn't even have time to escape—it was crushed on the spot.

"Impossible!!!"

The tattooed man's face twisted in terror as he scrambled to pull out a protective talisman. But before he could even scream—

His eyes bulged wide, and he collapsed like a statue onto the floor.

Not breathing.

Dead.

Shen Huo looked up at the looming shadow in the sky. He only managed to catch a glimpse of its chin before everything went black and he passed out.

·

When he finally came to again, Shen Huo realized he was back in the rental apartment.

"You're awake?"

Shen Huo blinked. He was lying on the sofa, and Yin Jiuxuan's voice was echoing from above.

He looked up—and from this angle, the man's chiseled side profile looked even more handsome.

'Whoa, he looks even better from down here.'

Yin Jiuxuan noticed his silence and glanced down at him.

"Did you hit your head?"

Shen Huo blinked and gave a cheeky grin. "I'm looking at you."

"Looking at me?"

"Yeah, you're way too good-looking."

Yin Jiuxuan rolled up his book and thwacked him lightly on the head.

"You cheeky monkey."

Shen Huo dodged back quickly, bounced to his feet, and ran off laughing.

Yin Jiuxuan shook his head and went back to his book.

Shen Huo walked over to the window and tapped on the glass.

A few minutes later, Yang Yiyi finally appeared.

She had visible burn marks all over her, but she looked okay otherwise.

"Sister, you alright?"
