Daily Life in the Pet Shop Ch. 175
"Alright." Du Qianze took what Fang Yi passed him and finished it in just a few bites. After a quick cleanup, he followed Fang Yi downstairs. Ning Feng and Pei Haoyan were already there, having finalized the time and place for later. They were deep in conversation about what Naiba and Pei Datou liked—trying to see if the two dogs had any shared interests.
"There you guys are. Xiao Du, you ready? The movie's gonna start filming in a few days," Ning Feng greeted Du Qianze, then turned to Fang Yi and asked, "You think my Naiba might actually fall for Pei Datou?"
"Give it a shot," Fang Yi said, his expression unreadable. Deep down, he kind of hoped Naiba would fall for Pei Datou. Maybe then they could end up with a litter of puppies that looked just like Naima. But honestly, he knew in his heart that Naiba probably wasn't the type to switch loyalties.
"We were just talking about it—got any advice?" Ning Feng pressed.
"Nope. Naiba's not like regular dogs. Even if I gave advice, it wouldn't help." Fang Yi glanced at Naiba, who was clinging to Naima like a shadow, and shook his head. "Most dogs fall for whoever they see. But Naiba? That clingy, loyal little thing? Never seen anything like it."
"Alright then. We'll go back and brainstorm on our own," Pei Haoyan said. The more he thought about Fang Yi's words, the more he felt they made sense. Naiba really wasn't like other dogs, so normal tactics weren't gonna cut it. Problem was, they didn't have any unnormal tactics either. Guess they'd just have to wing it when the time came.
"Well, good luck with that. I'm gonna go check out the backyard. It's about time to hit the market—I'm making steamed corn buns for them today. Don't take Pei Datou just yet," Fang Yi said as he watched Pei Haoyan and Ning Feng go back to plotting their dog match-making plan like it was some real serious business. He couldn't be bothered listening to any more and went off to inspect the backyard.
School was on break lately, and Ao Ranqi had been coming over every day. Probably still feeling awkward after that argument with Fang Yi, he didn't talk much to anyone. Without being told, he quietly took care of everything in the yard—feeding the cats and dogs, cleaning out the litter boxes—and then curled up in a corner to play with the squirrels, trying his best to stay invisible. He was just a kid, thin-skinned and easy to scare, but also free labor. Fang Yi didn't mind as long as things got done, and he never made the first move to talk to him—he was worried the kid might spook and stop coming.
The kid showed up early that day too. The pet food was all in place, the litter boxes were clean, and everything was handled. Fang Yi took Du Qianze on a quick round of the backyard. Once he saw everything was good, he got ready to head out to buy groceries.
When they passed the front desk, Fang Yue was slumped over, playing games with zero energy and a lost expression on her face.
"What are you doing out here?" Fang Yi waved a hand in front of her face.
"Those two are going all in on the whole Pei Datou and Naiba thing. They're so fired up, I couldn't even get a word in, so I just came out here," Fang Yue leaned closer to Fang Yi. "Hey, do you think Naiba and Pei Datou could actually work out?"
"Nope," Fang Yi answered without hesitation.
"Yeah, I don't think so either. Come on, Naiba's not the type to fall for someone else. Their idea is just totally unrealistic. Why didn't you tell them?" Fang Yue clearly agreed with Fang Yi—it was obvious to her that Naiba and Pei Datou were a no-go.
"If I don't let them try, they won't give it up," Fang Yi said. He figured Ning Feng probably knew it wouldn't work either. He just didn't want to admit it yet.
"True." Fang Yue nodded, then looked down and zoned out for a moment, like she wanted to say something. After a long pause, she still didn't say anything. Instead, she pulled a few bills out of the drawer and handed them to Fang Yi. "You're making corn buns today, right? Remember to grab me some snacks while you're out. I'm in a bad mood—I need a feast."
"Bad mood? Who pissed you off?" In this shop, Fang Yi didn't even hold as much sway as Fang Yue—who'd even dare to mess with her?
"No one. Just go. I'll tell you when I feel like it," Fang Yue stuffed the money into Fang Yi's hand and plopped back into her seat.
"If it's something serious, you can talk to Auntie, too. Doesn't always have to be me," Du Qianze chimed in quietly from behind Fang Yi, reminding him that Fang Yue was a girl, and there might be stuff she wouldn't want to say to him directly.
"Got it. Go already." Fang Yue waved him off.
As Fang Yi passed the break room, he instinctively called for Naima. Naima came bounding out, followed by a string of dogs—and two people.
"I can go alone. Pei Datou and Pei Daniu can walk around with Naima. Let Naiba stay here. The market's filthy—one round through there and Naiba's fur'll be a mess," Ning Feng said, casually showing up at the pet shop like it was no big deal. The people in the shop were used to it by now, but if someone recognized him at the market, there'd be no way he could do his shopping in peace.
"It's fine, they can bathe here. If Naiba doesn't get to go with Naima, she's gonna be upset," Ning Feng said, already caving at the sight of Naiba's sad little face. He couldn't handle it when Naiba looked like that—all his principles went straight out the window.
"Okay, then all three of you stay. Pei Datou and Pei Daniu are staying too. I'll take Naima and Naiba to the market," Fang Yi said, glancing down at Naiba's pitiful look and giving in too.
"No problem. We'll keep a close eye on Pei Datou and Pei Daniu," Ning Feng said, patting his chest like he was swearing an oath.
"I'll go with you. I need to pick up a few things," Du Qianze suddenly offered.
"Alright. You two stay here, and keep a close eye on Pei Datou and Pei Daniu," Fang Yi said, giving a few instructions before heading out with Naima and Naiba.
"Another guy who drops his friends like a hot potato once he's married," Ning Feng said to Fang Yi's retreating back, then turned to Pei Haoyan. "Come on, let's get back to discussing little Naiba."
Naiba was absolutely thrilled to be allowed to tag along with Naima for the shopping trip. She walked tall and proud right next to Naima. Anytime another dog so much as glanced at Naima, Naiba would whip her head around and bark loud enough to scare the other dog off. She was super aggressive about it and drew quite the crowd of onlookers.
Fang Yi first stopped by a few familiar vendors to reserve some items, then followed behind Du Qianze to help with the shopping.
