Daily Life in the Pet Shop Ch. 174
"Naima's not scared of people—he's scared of dogs," Fang Yi said as he handed Naima's leash to Pei Haoyan. Then he took Pei Datou's leash himself and sent him in first to lead the way back into the store.
"Scared of dogs?" Pei Haoyan glanced at Naima, clearly intrigued.
Du Qianze had told him that Naima could basically boss around every animal in the pet store. Fang Yi even said just earlier that Naima had walked Pei Datou around to greet everyone, and now none of the animals would dare mess with him. A dog that badass actually had a dog he was afraid of? What kind of monster was this other dog—scarier than that Tibetan mastiff Fang Yi kept in the backyard?
Before he could figure it out, a large golden dog came sprinting straight at him and immediately went behind him to rub affectionately up against Naima. It even licked him a few times, tail wagging like crazy. Naima, on the other hand, looked completely over it.
"Naiba, look, this is Naima's little brother." Fang Yi gestured toward Pei Datou. Even though Pei Datou looked exactly like Naima, Naiba didn't even glance at him and made a beeline for Naima. Fang Yi found that more than a little weird. He'd specifically held onto Pei Datou's leash thinking Naiba might mistake him for Naima. But Naiba didn't even hesitate. Sure, dogs have a good sense of smell, but from that far away?
"Woof." Naiba finally turned and gave Pei Datou a half-hearted bark in greeting before turning right back to Naima and continuing her overly affectionate routine.
"What is it that Naiba even sees in Naima?" Ning Feng walked up from behind, looking confused. "Isn't he just into Naima's looks? Pei Datou literally looks exactly the same. And yet Naiba didn't even glance at him—why is she so cold to Pei Datou?"
"I'd like to know that too," Fang Yi sighed. If Naiba could just redirect that affection to Pei Datou, it'd be a huge relief for Naima. He really had zero interest in any kind of romantic nonsense.
"There's actually a dog out there who looks just like Naima, and you didn't tell me? That's so shady, Fang Yi. If I'd known, I would've brought Naiba here way earlier to see if she could move on already." Ning Feng looked half-exasperated. If he hadn't had his ears to the ground, he might've totally missed out on Pei Datou.
"Wouldn't matter whether you brought her earlier or not—what good would it do?" Fang Yi said as he led them to the lounge area and called Fang Yue over to keep them company. He headed upstairs to bring Du Qianze his breakfast—better eat it while it was hot, or it wouldn't taste good.
"Man, I have to at least try. I'm not giving up without a fight. I want a little Naiba puppy," Ning Feng said with a wistful sigh.
His dream had always been to find a purebred golden retriever for Naiba to mate with and have a litter of perfect golden pups. But Naiba just wasn't into other goldens—only Naima.
It had taken Ning Feng a long time to talk himself down from that dream. Eventually he convinced himself that bloodlines didn't matter, as long as there were puppies. And then he found out Naima was spayed. That dream shattered on the spot.
"...What's going on here exactly?" Pei Haoyan asked, completely confused. From Naiba's behavior and Ning Feng's dramatic tone, it definitely seemed like something deeper was going on.
"You must be Pei Datou's owner, right? I'm Ning Feng—Naiba's owner. My Naiba, isn't she pretty?" Ning Feng pointed proudly at Naiba as he introduced himself to Pei Haoyan.
"Yeah," Pei Haoyan nodded. He didn't know much about dog breeds, but just by looking at Naiba's build, coat, and eyes, he could tell this golden retriever was top-tier.
"I've put in so much effort over the years raising her, and what happens? She falls for Naima." Ning Feng looked heartbroken as he gestured dramatically at Naiba.
"I can tell," Pei Haoyan said with a nod. Naiba's behavior toward Naima was basically full-on simping. She followed him everywhere, kept bringing him treats, placing them right at his paws, while poor Pei Datou circled nearby anxiously, trying and failing to snatch even a crumb.
"I introduced her to tons of golden retrievers, and she wasn't interested in any of them. But Naima? She falls head over heels. And fine, I could live with that if it was mutual, but Naima's not into her at all. On top of that, he's been spayed. So no little Naibas for me. By the way, has your Pei Datou been neutered?" Ning Feng asked hopefully, clearly still holding on to a dream.
"Nope," Pei Haoyan shook his head. Pei Datou was pretty chill, not the type to play around with other dogs or get attached to any particular female. Whether he was neutered or not didn't really affect him, so Pei Haoyan had never gotten around to it.
"Great, then from now on, I'll bring Naiba over more often to hang out with your Pei Datou—see if she might actually start liking him. I've got no expectations anymore. If he could just give me a litter of little Naibas, I'd be totally satisfied."
Ning Feng glanced back and forth between Pei Datou and Naiba and let out a long sigh, shaking his head.
He was saying all the right things, but deep down, he didn't feel too optimistic. Still, maybe Naiba would go for Pei Datou just because of the familiar looks... maybe.
Pei Haoyan really liked Pei Datou, but he wasn't blindly convinced that his Pei Datou was the best dog ever. Naiba obviously looked better than Pei Datou. If they really could have a bunch of puppies together, they'd definitely be way cooler than your average mutts. So the two of them talked it over and quickly came to an agreement about how to split the puppies.
Naiba was busy handing out the snacks she brought for Naima and didn't notice that her dad had just successfully found her a boyfriend.
Fang Yue was standing off to the side, listening quietly. She didn't say anything, but in her mind, the whole plan was doomed from the start. Just from how Naiba acted around Pei Datou, you could tell—there was no way this was gonna work out.
Fang Yi went upstairs with some stuff and found Du Qianze already awake, standing by the window, looking at the view outside.
"Nice, huh?" Fang Yi had seen this scenery for years, so it didn't really do much for him.
"It is. First time I've seen it from here," Du Qianze replied, still looking out the window without turning around.
"I brought you breakfast. Eat it while it's hot. Ning Feng and Pei Haoyan are already here. Once you're done, we'll head down together," Fang Yi said as he handed the breakfast over.
