Daily Life in the Pet Shop Ch. 172

"Woof woof woof..." Naima barked twice at the dog that had followed them, then walked over to Fang Yi, gently picked up the puppy, and placed it in front of the larger dog. The big dog sniffed the puppy, licked it a couple of times, then picked it up and walked off.

"Naima, go home and teach Pei Datou properly, what kind of animals can be picked up and what kind can't." Fang Yi sighed. Pei Datou probably had no clue and ended up bringing back someone's pet puppy.

"Awoo..." Pei Datou lay on the ground all embarrassed, head down.

"It's fine, just don't be so reckless next time. Let's go home." Fang Yi patted Pei Datou on the head, comforted him a bit, then picked up the two kittens Naima had brought home and got up to leave.

"Be careful next time." Du Qianze tried to keep a straight face as he comforted Pei Datou. He honestly wanted to laugh at the whole thing, but didn't want to hurt Pei Datou's feelings, so he held it in as best he could.

Pei Daniu walked over and smacked Pei Datou twice with her paw. Pei Datou whimpered softly, got up, and followed behind Pei Daniu with his tail tucked down.

Pei Datou had only been with Pei Haoyan for a short time before he was taken overseas. Since he couldn't communicate with the local dogs and had... questionable taste, Pei Datou hardly ever played with others.

Every day he just played with toys at home or went for short walks. He got pretty bored, which made him develop a quiet and reserved personality. To Pei Haoyan, that came off as "cool and aloof," and Pei Datou kind of liked that vibe too. Who would've thought that not long after returning to China, his whole image would just collapse. It was honestly kind of depressing.

Pei Datou still wanted to keep up that aloof persona around Pei Haoyan. Every time he saw Pei Haoyan trying to tease him with the same old toys, he still thought it was actually pretty fun.

Pei Haoyan was asleep, and suddenly jolted awake as if he'd just thought of Pei Datou. He reached out to pat his head, but touched nothing—and then remembered he'd left Pei Datou at the pet shop.

Even though he was the type to love sleeping in, Pei Haoyan got up super early the next day, ready to storm over to the pet shop to see Pei Datou. He figured Pei Datou must've been sleeping on the cold floor, and just thinking about it made his heart ache. It also gave him the perfect excuse to bring Pei Datou back.

When Pei Haoyan got to the shop, it was already open. Fang Yi was just about to take Naima out for a run, and Pei Daniu and Pei Datou were still in bed.

"Hey, boss, I'm here to check on Pei Datou. How's he doing here? Did he cause any trouble last night? Was he okay sleeping here?" What Pei Haoyan actually meant was: Without me around, Pei Datou must've made a mess, right?

"He was fine. The two of them went to bed a little late last night, they're still upstairs sleeping," Fang Yi said, seeing how worried Pei Haoyan looked. He didn't say much more and just took him straight upstairs.

Pei Datou and Pei Daniu were curled up in their beds, fast asleep. The moment Pei Haoyan saw that, he felt a little betrayed. So much for "not sleeping anywhere but home"—why was Pei Datou so chill about a new place now?

Pei Datou twitched his nose, opened his eyes, and when he realized it was Pei Haoyan, his ears perked up and he happily launched himself into his arms. That finally reassured Pei Haoyan a bit. At least the little guy still remembered me.

Pei Datou stayed in his arms, all snuggly, for a while before hopping down, proudly tugging at Pei Haoyan to show him the puppy he had picked up yesterday.

Turns out, Pei Datou wasn't happy about being the only one who didn't find a stray, so on the way back, he ran around like crazy. Under Naima's guidance, he finally found a stray puppy and successfully brought it back to the pet shop.

Pei Datou was very invested in the little dog he had brought home. He followed Fang Yi around, watching closely as he handled everything. He even memorized exactly where Fang Yi put the dog. As soon as they got to the second floor, he bolted straight for the cage where the puppy was.

"Woof woof woof!" Pei Datou barked excitedly, calling Pei Haoyan over, then softly greeted the dog in the cage. The little dog was a small breed and already an adult. It had taken Pei Datou quite a bit of effort to bring it here.

"What the heck is this?" Pei Haoyan looked in the direction Pei Datou was pointing and saw the dog in the cage. Its fur was patchy and rough, all messy and scruffy. Honestly, not cute at all.

"Pei Datou, what's up with your taste? You actually picked this one?" Pei Haoyan thought Pei Datou had fallen for one of the dogs at the shop and wasn't impressed. The dog was... not exactly a looker.

"It didn't fall for it. That one's the dog he picked up yesterday," Fang Yi said, coming downstairs with Naima, and explained.

"He picked it up? Pei Datou already picked up on Naima's stray-rescuing habit that fast?" Pei Haoyan was a bit shocked. Back when they were abroad, Pei Datou wouldn't even look at other dogs—didn't matter how pretty they were, he'd just ignore them completely.

"Yeah." Fang Yi nodded, and seeing Pei Haoyan start to panic, quickly added, "But don't worry, Pei Datou's not like Naima. He just did it for fun. He won't be bringing strays home every day. Once he goes home with you, he won't keep doing it."

"Oh, thank God." Pei Haoyan patted his chest in relief. He liked animals, sure—but he wasn't Fang Yi. He didn't have the patience to open a whole pet shop just to care for a bunch of rescues. Keeping a ton of animals? That just wasn't his thing.

With nothing to worry about anymore, Pei Haoyan gave the dog Pei Datou had brought back another once-over. But even after a second look, he still felt the same—this dog was really ugly.

"Pei Datou, come on. You ignored all those purebred dogs abroad, and you ended up picking up this dirty mutt? What kind of taste do you even have?" Pei Haoyan was a little annoyed. Pei Datou seriously had terrible judgment.

"Woof woof woof." Pei Datou barked a few times, lifting his head to look at Pei Haoyan, clearly proud.

What Pei Datou meant was: dogs of his breed are the good-looking ones.

Pei Haoyan didn't understand him, but he could more or less tell what he was getting at. He was kind of disgusted with Pei Datou—how could he not be into those fancy breeds? Though, to be fair, he sometimes thought those dogs were kinda ugly too.
