His overexcited brain was suddenly hit with a wave of sleepiness. In a haze, Li Yu'ao dozed off, completely unaware as a black mist seeped into his body. His once-relaxed face twisted into a frown, and though he struggled to open his eyes, the dream dragged him down like quicksand. He couldn't wake up.

Meanwhile, Jiang Yiqing was casually stroking Milk Ball's soft fur, lips curled into a pleasant smile. Whatever experience Li Yu'ao had prepared for him... well, he'd be sure to return the favor.

After all, it'd be rude to ignore such a heartfelt "gift."

Pang Pang glanced at Naiqiu, then at Jiang Yiqing, and curled his lip.

Human brat. And a clingy little lapdog. How annoying.

With a dramatic snort, Pang Pang turned around, plopped down with his butt facing Jiang Yiqing, and flopped over in a grumpy huff. His pudgy little body still radiated unresolved resentment.

Jiang Yiqing: "?"

What now? Pang Pang's mood swings were really something lately.

"Master Jiang, you're finally here." The middle-aged man had clearly been waiting anxiously. The moment he saw Jiang Yiqing, he rushed up and grabbed his hand with excitement.

His hair was a mess, dark circles hung under his eyes, and his whole vibe was frazzled. He even had a slight limp. Clearly, the past few days hadn't been kind to him.

Ever since he'd accidentally come into contact with something unclean, he hadn't gotten a good night's sleep. Thankfully, a friend helped him get in touch with Jiang Yiqing.

They said this Master Jiang was seriously skilled. Just seeing him in person gave the man a deep sense of relief.

Jiang Yiqing nodded, giving the man a once-over. "Let's go inside and talk."

The man nodded quickly and led Jiang Yiqing into the house. A woman was tidying up in the living room. When she saw the two of them come in, she didn't say a word.

The man smiled and said, "Li Dan, pour our guest some tea. This is Master Jiang—he's here to help us."

Then he turned to Jiang Yiqing and said, "This is my wife."

Jiang Yiqing greeted her politely. "Hello."

Li Dan had been wiping down the table. She paused, glanced up at him, gave a half-hearted twitch of her lips, then silently turned and walked away.

The man—Yu Zhenping—looked a little embarrassed. "Don't mind her. She's just like that with everyone. Nothing personal. She means well."

Jiang Yiqing didn't seem to care. He gestured for Yu Zhenping to explain the situation in more detail.

Yu Zhenping nodded and sighed, beginning his story.

It all started a little while back when he went to pay respects to his ancestors. That day, it happened to be pouring rain. He'd already felt unlucky—getting drenched just to perform a ritual—but his wife was in poor health, so he had to go alone.

The ancestral graveyard was out in the countryside, all little hills and muddy paths. He trudged through the rain and finished the ritual, soaked to the bone.

On the way back, he came across a woman in her twenties. Her hair was dripping wet, her clothes plastered to her skin. She asked if he could give her a ride.

She looked pale and fragile, and something about her reminded Yu Zhenping of his daughter. His heart softened. It was just a ride, no big deal—of course he said yes.

He still remembered how, after he agreed, the woman silently followed behind him. The air between them felt awkward. He tried starting a conversation a few times, but she barely responded.

Yu Zhenping figured she was just a shy girl. When she first asked him for help, she'd looked super nervous too.

So, he stopped trying to make small talk.

The two of them walked down the mountain in silence, rain soaking through their clothes. The girl was clearly worried about dirtying his car.

Yu Zhenping had chuckled and told her, "Don't worry about it—I'm soaked too. We'll just have someone clean the car later."

The girl nodded silently and got into the back seat of the car.

Yu Zhenping started the engine and drove away from the little mountain village where he'd gone to pay respects to his ancestors. "Where do you live, miss?" he asked over his shoulder.

No response.

Finding that strange, he asked again. Still nothing.

Frowning, Yu Zhenping glanced into the rearview mirror—only to find no one there.

His entire body went cold with shock. He nearly crushed the steering wheel in his hands. Swallowing hard, he caught a shadow in his peripheral vision, sitting right beside him.

He didn't dare look... but then the girl's soft voice echoed beside him.

"Uncle, I'm right here. Why are you looking back there?"

Yu Zhenping's breath came in panicked gasps, his ears filled with the sound of his own wheezing. His vision blurred. He forgot he was even driving.

Compelled by the eerie voice, he turned his head stiffly toward the passenger seat.

The girl was facing forward, but her head had twisted unnaturally to face him. Her pale face stared at him with a twisted smile.

Yu Zhenping felt his heart seize up.

And then she smiled wider, her voice low and bone-chilling:
"Uncle, what are you so afraid of?"

"You said you'd take me home. You wouldn't go back on your word, would you?" she said softly, tears of blood streaming down her cheeks. "If you do... I'll be so sad. I'll cry like this."

That was the last straw.

The car swerved violently, crashing into the side of the road. Yu Zhenping blacked out.

When he woke up, he was in a hospital bed.

At first, he thought it had all been a dream. But once he got home, he realized it hadn't been. The girl... was still with him.

Words written in blood would appear on mirrors. Water would overflow from the bathtub for no reason. And he kept having horrific nightmares.

It was driving him insane.

"I was just trying to do a good deed," Yu Zhenping said, gripping his messy hair with both hands. "How was I supposed to know the place she wanted to go back to... was my house?!"

"I've tried everything. But she just won't leave." His voice cracked in despair. "If I'd known, I'd never have helped her!"

Jiang Yiqing looked around thoughtfully. The house was definitely steeped in thick yin energy.

Just then, thud—a teacup hit the table in front of him. Li Dan had brought over the tea and slammed it down.

Yu Zhenping laughed awkwardly. "Heh, my wife's been in a bad mood lately. Sorry about that."

Jiang Yiqing shook his head, watching Li Dan's retreating back. "It's strange. She doesn't seem scared at all."
