Mrs. Xu gave him a fake smile. "No, of course not. Nothing like that."
Xu Kaida glanced at Jiang Yiqing, who was busy setting up the formation, and made up his mind that he had to prove himself tonight. If his will wasn't strong, how did he go from some broke farm kid to the Xu Boss everyone talked about?
Once the array was set up, the Xu residence looked just the same as always—completely normal on the outside.
Even though Xu Kaida always had a sour face around Zhuang Kangyu, when it came to hosting guests, he still followed the proper manners.
After a huge dinner, everyone went back to their rooms. Jiang Yiqing sat down in a chair, bored out of his mind, and somehow dug up an ancient book to read.
He didn't even make it through a page before quietly closing it.
Yeah, this was one of the few things the old man had left him. It was cryptic as hell, and every time he read it, he'd get sleepy.
He thought after all this time he'd made some progress, but nope—same as always, not better or worse.
Clearly, this book wasn't gonna help tonight. If he fell asleep, that'd be way too embarrassing.
So he just took out his phone to find something more interesting to kill time.
Meanwhile, in the Xu master bedroom, Xu Kaida was all jittery. One moment flipping through files, next second checking his phone, then glancing at his wife again.
Mrs. Xu couldn't take it anymore and frowned. "You got ants in your pants or something?"
Xu Kaida coughed. "I was just thinking... tonight, ahem..."
He trailed off halfway through, afraid that thing might be listening, and started winking like crazy at Mrs. Xu.
Xu Kaida was in his fifties now, but unlike Zhuang Kangyu, he still had a full head of hair. Because of that, every time they were together, he felt this weird sense of pride.
Hmph, look at Zhuang Kangyu with that balding patch—looks at least ten years older than him. But him? His hair was thick and black, he probably looked ten years younger than his actual age!
But Xu Kaida had the unavoidable pain of every middle-aged man—he was fat. Not just a beer belly. His whole body was round.
Which made his current expression look especially greasy.
Mrs. Xu couldn't watch anymore and stood up. "I'm going to bed."
"So early?" Xu Kaida coughed again, shooting a meaningful glance toward the door.
Mrs. Xu ignored him completely, lay down, and shut her eyes. Seeing this, Xu Kaida had no choice but to lie down beside her. Inwardly, he was fuming—his wife was so unreliable, and she still wanted to sleep?
Fine. He could only count on himself now.
Xu Kaida gripped the talisman Jiang Yiqing had given him, holding it tightly to his chest as he stayed alert.
But before long... his breathing slowed and evened out.
Mrs. Xu noticed the silence and called his name softly a few times. When there was absolutely no response—
Mrs. Xu: "..."
Just as she was silently cursing, a wave of drowsiness hit her like a truck. Her eyelid twitched—something's wrong. She usually had to lie there forever before falling asleep, so how could she be this sleepy already?
She remembered what Jiang Yiqing had said about that thing putting people to sleep first...
Just as her consciousness began slipping, Mrs. Xu used the last of her willpower to clutch the talisman close to her. Suddenly, she felt a chill at her temple—and just like that, she snapped back to clarity.
Letting out a slow breath, she didn't dare open her eyes and continued pretending to sleep.
Sure enough, it wasn't long before she heard the sound of water in the room.
Her whole body tensed, palms sweating as she gripped the talisman even tighter.
At the same time, Jiang Yiqing felt the array activate and instantly shot up and out of his room.
Zhuang Kangyu had been arranged in the room next door. Although he'd come all the way here just to watch Xu Kaida make a fool of himself—and pretended to be totally unfazed—the truth was, when he was alone, he was still kinda scared.
So he didn't even try to sleep. He was on high alert, ears straining for any sound. The second he heard a door creak open next door, he bolted outside—and sure enough, there was Jiang Yiqing.
"Master Jiang, I'm coming with you!" Zhuang Kangyu whispered.
Jiang Yiqing raised a brow. "Not scared?"
Zhuang Kangyu's face flushed. He knew Jiang Yiqing must've heard something to come out. With a sheepish cough, he admitted, "I'm more scared being in there alone."
Jiang Yiqing didn't bother saying much. It wasn't a particularly dangerous creature, and if Zhuang Kangyu wanted to tag along, he could.
Seeing he wasn't being chased away, Zhuang Kangyu hurried to keep up.
Back in the master bedroom, Mrs. Xu could hear the water sounds drawing closer and closer. Her eyelids twitched uncontrollably.
She could even feel droplets of water splashing on her face with each movement the thing made. The sound of water slapping the ground grew louder... and closer...
Then she heard a series of "pa pa pa" slaps—like something smacking Xu Kaida's face.
Hard.
Like it had some serious beef with him.
Mrs. Xu was freaking out. She swallowed nervously. Then she felt it accidentally slap her face too.
Wet. Sticky. Cold. Ew.
That was it. She couldn't take it anymore. She picked her moment, pulled out the talisman, and held it up. Instantly, her hand grew hot—and a strange screech rang out from beside her.
"You filthy, tricksy humans! I hate you—waaaaahhhh..."
The voice sounded like a crying kid and completely shattered the creepy, horror-movie vibe.
Mrs. Xu forced herself to open her eyes—and not far away was a golden koi fish lying on the ground. Her eyes widened.
So it wasn't a water ghost?!
But wait... why did this fish look so familiar?!
The golden koi noticed her looking and wailed even louder, glaring at her angrily—yes, glaring. That fish could totally glare! After giving Mrs. Xu the stink-eye, it slapped its tail down and tried to flop out of the room.
But the next second, something was triggered.
A watery orb enveloped the koi in an instant. Its previously dry scales were instantly soaked, and it sighed in visible relief.
But then... it realized no matter how hard it flopped, it couldn't escape.
"Let me go! Let me goooo!" the koi wailed, tail flapping wildly to no avail.
The next moment, two people walked into the room.
The golden koi could sense danger radiating from the handsome young man—no doubt, this weird water orb was his doing.

I did think the koi fish were spirits playing around, but this one seems like it holds a bit of a petty grudge!
